Ten Baroque angels by Bernini run down the travertine parapet and I lean on them in almost every set: one angel over your shoulder, or the full row drawing the eye to St Peter's dome down the river. Because it's pedestrian-only I can walk you along the centre line with nothing in frame but stone, sky and water. I start in the first hour after sunrise — quiet, soft light — because by late morning it's wall-to-wall tour groups.
